Chirunning is the ONLY way to run injury
free.
When I was injured running a marathon that I
was ill prepared for in 2003, I didn't think I could run that
far ever again. I went to the doctor for treatment, was misdiagnosed
and then went through 2 years of trial and error until I realized
what we really wrong with me. (I did meet Annmarie along the
way, which I'm sure I'll tell you some other time!)
The doctor and the PT thought it was my hamstrings
that were tight (which they were right about), but this was
not what was causing my injury to reoccur. I was overusing
my calf muscles and it was because I was pushing off for speed.
The adjustment that changed my running life
was made when I found Danny Dreyer's Book "ChiRunning."
His emphasis is on letting gravity do the work
while your legs rest and only support you with your footfalls,
not push you along. What a great idea!
My calves were suddenly so loose they were flapping
in the wind. I spent months perfecting his form and even went
to a seminar to get hands on training! I have no more pain
in my calves and now am running 1-2 hours for my short runs
and up to 3-4 for long runs!
Many people have similar stories that involve
running injuries that might even involve surgery or worse...
replacement. Modern medicine has given us the ability to forget
about how to take care of an injury by body sensing and then
adjustment. This is how I managed to find out what was hurting
me and how to change my form and technique.
Let's face the facts here... how many of
us were actually taught how to run? Not me.
I remember hearing "heel-toe" a bunch,
so that is what we've always done. Unfortunately, the old
heel-toe approach is incorrect and places too much strain
on the legs and hips. Why does everyone still teach it? Because
they've never read Chirunning I suppose.
If you support a heel-toe technique, run a lap
around your local track barefoot. I guarantee you'll never
want to land on your heels again!
Danny's approach is effortless and when you
begin Chirunning he encourages you to start slowly, which
is the major cause of runner burnout in the first place.
